Documentary: Mitch Docker's Great Outback Beer Run

Ex-pro Mitch Docker and Alby Iacuone head deep into Australia's remote Outback in pursuit of adventure and beer

After a decade in Europe racing in the pro peloton, Mitch Docker has moved back to his Australian homeland. But after all those years in Europe, Mitch isn't as familiar with his own backyard as he'd like. In our latest film over on GCN+, Mitch links up with friend Alby Iacuone, and together they plunge into the outback for a bikepacking trip to remember.

Out there in Australia's remote interior lie tiny towns, thrown up during the 19th century, when the country was blossoming from a British penal colony to an independent state. Many of these tiny settlements still remain, some with as few as 10 residents.

Like the traders who came here to build their fortune, Mitch and Alby will be relying on these tiny outposts in the outback to keep themselves fed, watered and sheltered. Riding from pub to pub on loaded bikes, they will retrace the routes of Victorian travellers.

They’ll be meeting locals whose lives centre around these classic boozers, encountering exotic wildlife, and exploring the outback in all its raw, untouched beauty. ‌

Their goal is to reach the very heart of Australia where the great states of New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia meet. Can they make it through nearly 500km of dirt paths and gnarly trails through an unforgiving desert in just four days?

Mitch Docker's Great Outback Beer Run is out now on GCN+. Watch on demand and explore our extensive collection of exclusive and original cycling films.
