Christophe Laporte suffers cuts in a crash on stage 5, and would pull out of the Giro d'Italia ahead of stage 8
Taking place over three weeks, with all the possibilities for injury, illness, and fatigue mounting up over the course of the 21 stages, the men’s Grand Tours always see a steady rate of attrition, and the 2024 Giro d’Italia is no different.
We’ve had some big names on the abandon list, including Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Wanty), Eddie Dunbar (Jayco-AlUla), Florian Lipowitz (Bora-Hansgrohe), and the Visma-Lease a Bike quartet of Christophe Laporte, Olav Kooij, Robert Gesink and the man who was placed fifth overall, Cian Uijtdebroeks.

The worst-affected team, though, are Israel-Premier Tech, with over half of their squad wiped out by the final week. As well as climbing leader Michael Woods and sprint leader Ethan Vernon, Israel-Premier Tech were also without Riley Pickrell and Nadav Raisberg, who were both making their Grand Tour debuts, before Nick Schultz left them with just three riders ahead of stage 19.
Race leader Tadej Pogačar still has a full complement of UAE Team Emirates teammates, as does Geraint Thomas in a strong Ineos Grenadiers squad, although they're behind Decathlon-AG2R in the teams classification, with the French team also still with eight riders.
