Schwalbe launches Pro One Aero, their most aerodynamic tyre yet

Schwalbe has released its new Pro One Aero tyre and they say that it’s their most aerodynamic tyre yet, replacing the Pro One TT.

Developed in collaboration with Scott, Syncros and Radiate, the German brand claims that the 28mm wide version of the tyre produces 20% less drag at 45 kph compared to their TT tyre in a 25mm width.

The tyre is tubeless compatible and features Schwalbe’s RaceGuard material for added puncture protection.

It will be available to order from the beginning of October.

‘Best possible aerodynamic tyres’

When setting out on this new project, Schwalbe wanted to create the “best possible aerodynamic tyres that do not compromise on driving performance.”

That led to a split approach with a focus on aerodynamics on the front tyre, where drag is a bigger factor, and less rolling resistance on the rear. As a result both tyres have been constructed differently.

The aerodynamic profile of the front tyre has been achieved through extensive testing in both the wind tunnel and on the road, and Schwalbe says that the shape of the tyre has been optimised for modern wide rims.

The front tyre has a claimed weight of 235g and it’s hard to find a race tyre which clocks in below that.

The rear tyre is a little heavier at a claimed 270g.

Schwalbe teamed up with Scott and Syncros as a part of the development of the tyre, a project that has also led to the new Syncros Capital SL wheelset which was also released today.

A pure TT tyre?

The Pro One Aero replaces the Pro One TT as Schwalbe's most aerodynamic tyre.

With a refined aerodynamic profile and claims of 20% less drag, it’s no surprise that the Pro One Aero is a performance-orientated tyre.

Schwalbe says that it’s already been used in competition by various professional teams and triathlon athletes who helped with its development.

They also say that its first large-scale use in a race setting will be in Nice at the Ironman World Championships in September, just ahead of its full release.

That essentially means that it’ll fully replace the Pro One TT tyre as the brands triathlon/time trial tyre, but it’s not clear if it will also be used in other scenarios such as road races instead of the popular Pro One.

There were some clues in the images released by Schwalbe which show the tyre on a Scott Foil, the Swiss brands aero race bike. We’ll keep a look out over the coming months to see if we can spot the tyre used at any road races.

The new tyres will be available to order for €79.90 in a size 28mm from the beginning of October.
